How often is the SJ night train late? Arrival delays by train
Nobody publishes how late each Swedish night train actually is, so we started measuring it. Every night we record when each SJ night train reaches its last stop, using Trafikverket's open data, and the tables below update themselves every day. In the first six nights we measured, 9 to 14 October 2026, the night train to Umeå and the one back from Umeå were almost always on time, while train 1 from Stockholm to Malmö was late on all five nights it ran.

How we measure
A train counts as on time when it reaches its last stop at most five minutes after the timetable. That is the same threshold the official Swedish statistics use: Trafikanalys measures punctuality at the trains' final stations, and reports that 86.9 percent of planned trains in Sweden arrived within five minutes in 2025. That figure covers all passenger trains, not just night trains, so it is a useful yardstick for the tables below.
We take the scheduled and actual arrival times from Trafikverket's open traffic data once a day. Trafikverket only keeps about five days of history, so we archive each night ourselves. Our record for Sweden starts on 9 October 2026, which means the tables are thin for now and grow by one night at a time. Each table shows how many nights it is based on.
"Typical delay" is the median: half the nights were better, half were worse. "Bad night" is the delay that one night in ten reaches or exceeds. A negative or zero delay is shown as on time.
Stockholm to Malmö
Train 1 runs south from Stockholm and calls at Lund before Malmö, where we measure it.
| Train | Arrives on time | Typical delay | Bad night (1 in 10) | Runs, period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Stockholm C to Malmö C | 25% | 13 min | 76 min | 8 2026-10-09 to 2026-10-18 |
On time means at most 5 minutes late at the last stop. Counted by us from Fintraffic Digitraffic (CC BY 4.0) and Trafikverket open data. Put these numbers on your own site.
Stockholm to Åre and Duved
The trains to the Jämtland mountains, 70 northbound and 71 southbound. On one night in our record, train 70 ended at Östersund instead of Duved; runs like that are left out of the table when there are too few of them to say anything.
| Train | Arrives on time | Typical delay | Bad night (1 in 10) | Runs, period |

What the numbers do not tell you
We measure the arrival at the last stop. A train that is late into Malmö may have been on time at Lund, and the other way round. We also do not know why a train was late: the data gives times, not causes. Cancelled departures are counted separately and are not part of the on time share.
If you were on one of these trains and know what happened on a late night, you can tell us what you saw. It is checked by an editor before it is shown.
