Changing at Narvik: from the night train to the bus
The regional buses out of Narvik do not leave from the railway station. Their main departure point is Narvik bus terminal, about a kilometre's walk away, but most of them also call at Bromsgård, a stop a few minutes from the station. This guide covers that walk, the bus lines towards Tromsø, Lofoten, Harstad, Evenes airport and Bodø, and what the station offers while you wait. Everything here was checked on 12 October 2026.
The train into Narvik
The train to Narvik is run by SJ. Since 13 April 2026 there has been no through night train: passengers from Stockholm change in Boden from the night train to a day train, a set-up that Trafikverket's director general described as having caused discontent. In Trafikverket's own traffic data for October 2026, the onward train is SJ InterCity 98, running from Luleå to Narvik.
That changes with the timetable in December. Trafikverket has awarded SJ a new contract from December 2026 to 2028, with a daily return trip between Stockholm and Narvik with couchettes and sleepers and no change of train.
Narvik station while you wait
According to Bane NOR's station page, the waiting room is open every day from 07.00 to 19.00, and the Arctic Train Café inside is open from 10.00 to 18.00. The page lists an accessible toilet and a baby changing room.
There is nowhere at the station to leave luggage. Some travel sites still describe coin lockers here, but Bane NOR states plainly that there are no storage boxes at the station. It also says skis and sledges may not be brought into the building. Rail replacement buses leave from the bus stop Narvik stasjon in Stasjonsveien. See our Narvik station page for the station facts we hold and when each was checked.
Where the buses leave from
Visit Narvik says the regional buses run from Narvik bus terminal, at the Thon Malmporten shopping centre. In Entur's national stop register, the stop Bromsgård, much closer to the station, is also served by lines 100, 200 and 300 and by the airport bus FB82.
If you board at Bromsgård, check the time for that stop rather than the terminal. In Entur's departure list for Tuesday 13 October 2026, the buses towards Tromsø, Harstad and Lofoten called at Bromsgård two or three minutes after leaving the terminal. The morning bus towards Bodø did the opposite: it was timetabled at Bromsgård at 06:46 and at the terminal at 07:05, so on that trip it reaches Bromsgård first.
How far is the walk
No operator publishes this, so we calculated it. Method: the walking profile of the OpenStreetMap routing service run by FOSSGIS, on OpenStreetMap data, on 12 October 2026, starting from two points at the station (Entur's coordinate for Narvik stasjon and its coordinate for the platform).
- Station to Narvik bus terminal: 1,073 to 1,293 metres, about 14 to 17 minutes.
- Station to Bromsgård, the stop used by buses towards Tromsø, Harstad and Lofoten: 269 to 488 metres, about 4 to 7 minutes.
- Station to the Bromsgård stops on the other side, used by the bus towards Bodø and the airport bus: 406 to 662 metres, about 5 to 9 minutes.
The times are the router's estimate at an even walking pace. The calculation uses distance only, so it does not allow for gradient, snow or ice, or a heavy suitcase.
Which bus goes where
The Nordland routes are listed in Reis Nordland's timetables for Ofoten, and Entur shows all four regional routes below leaving from the terminal.
- Tromsø: line 100 Tromsø-Buktamoen-Narvik, run by Tide Buss for Svipper, the public transport brand of Troms county.
- Bodø: line 100 Bodø-Fauske-Narvik, run by Nordlandsbuss for Reis Nordland.
- Harstad and Harstad/Narvik airport Evenes: line 200 Narvik-Evenes-Harstad, run by Boreal for Reis Nordland. The airport is also served by Flybussen FB82, which sells its own tickets, not through Reis Nordland.
- Lofoten and Svolvær: line 300 Narvik-Svolvær-Leknes-Å, run by Boreal for Reis Nordland.
Entur also lists a commercial coach, Arctic Route 915 between Tromsø and Narvik, with a stop at Narvik stasjon itself. It had no departures on 13 October, so check whether it runs on your date.
Will the bus wait for a late train?
We found no operator that says so. Reis Nordland sells a combined TogBuss ticket that guarantees onward travel if a delay breaks the connection, but it covers changes in Grong, Mosjøen and Fauske, not Narvik. Its travel guarantee terms say that when a change has no fixed connection, you must allow enough time for the transfer and any walking yourself. Plan with a margin, and see how late the trains have actually been on our punctuality page.
Luggage on the bus
On Reis Nordland buses you may bring one larger bag of up to 30 kg in the luggage hold and one piece of hand luggage of up to 10 kg and 50 x 40 x 30 cm, which goes under the seat. A bicycle travels free if there is room and the driver judges it safe. On the Svipper bus to Tromsø, the allowance is 20 kg of hand baggage, with a charge for anything over that.
