Nightjet Vienna to Venice: train numbers, days and arrival time, checked
The night train from Vienna to Venice is ÖBB Nightjet NJ 40466, and the train back is NJ 40236. If you have also seen NJ 237, that is not an error. It is the number of the Nightjet from Stuttgart and Munich, and the Vienna cars run coupled to it for the second half of the night. This guide sets out what ÖBB's own timetable showed when we checked it on 16 October 2026.

One train, several numbers
In ÖBB's online timetable, NJ 40466 leaves Wien Hbf at 21:39. As far as Salzburg it runs together with NJ 466, the Nightjet from Vienna to Zürich. In Salzburg the Zürich cars carry on west, and the cars for Venice are joined to NJ 237, which has come from Stuttgart via Munich. From Salzburg to Venice the timetable lists NJ 40466 and NJ 237 as one train.
So both numbers are right, for different passengers. If you board in Vienna or Linz, your train is NJ 40466. NJ 237 is the number for passengers from Stuttgart, Ulm, Augsburg and Munich.
The return works the same way in reverse. NJ 40236 leaves Venezia Santa Lucia at 21:05 together with NJ 236 for Stuttgart. In Salzburg the Vienna cars are joined to NJ 467, the train from Zürich, and reach Wien Hbf at 07:58.
Route and times
The regular train does not run through Graz. ÖBB's Nightjet brochure lists the route as Vienna, Linz, Udine, Venice, and the timetable shows it running west to Salzburg, then south through Villach and over the border at Tarvisio Boscoverde.
Southbound on 2 November 2026: Wien Hbf 21:39, Linz 23:10, Salzburg 02:14, Villach 05:01, Udine 06:25, Treviso Centrale 07:58, Venezia Mestre 08:23 and Venezia Santa Lucia 08:34.
Northbound on the same date: Santa Lucia 21:05, Mestre 21:17, Udine 22:47, Villach 00:45, Salzburg 04:33, Linz 05:58 and Wien Hbf 07:58.
In Austria the southbound train only picks up. The timetable marks Wien Meidling, St. Pölten, Amstetten, Linz, Wels, Attnang-Puchheim and Salzburg as boarding only. Northbound, Linz, Amstetten, St. Pölten and Wien Meidling are for getting off only.
Which days
ÖBB's Venice page promises a daily night train from Austria or Germany. In the online timetable a train for Vienna to Venice and back is listed for every night up to 12 December 2026, the last day of the current timetable, but not always at the same times. On 24 to 26 October the Vienna train leaves at 22:40 and runs via Klagenfurt instead of Salzburg, still arriving at 08:34. On 20 October it is timetabled to reach Santa Lucia at 10:08. Check the exact date before you plan a connection.
Arrival: Santa Lucia, with a stop at Mestre
The train ends at Venezia Santa Lucia and stops at Venezia Mestre eleven minutes earlier. Going home, allow time at Santa Lucia: ÖBB Italia says that since 15 December 2024 there are access checks to the platforms, and advises departing passengers to arrive early.
