Is there still a sleeper from Barcelona to Paris? The workaround via Cerbère and Latour-de-Carol

No. In October 2026 there is no direct night train between Barcelona and Paris, and none of the plans we could find gives a date for one. You can still sleep most of the way: SNCF runs night trains from Paris Austerlitz to Cerbère, on the Spanish border, and to Latour-de-Carol in the Pyrenees, and Catalan local trains cover the rest. Via Cerbère the connection works well. Via Latour-de-Carol it is slow this autumn, because the Catalan line R3 does not currently run through to Barcelona. Everything here was checked on 16 October 2026.

What happened to the sleeper "starting in December 2024"

Asked on 16 October 2026, Google's AI Mode said there is no direct sleeper, but also that a new one had been "announced as starting in December 2024". The same wording appears on a travel site page from November 2024, which names no operator and cites no source. We found three real plans from that period. None of them is running:

Option 1: the night train to Cerbère

SNCF's Intercités de Nuit to Cerbère runs down the Mediterranean side of France through Montpellier, Narbonne and Perpignan. In SNCF's open timetable data (version of 10 October 2026), the train on Thursday 22 October leaves Paris Austerlitz at 21:25 and reaches Cerbère at 09:16 the next morning. It does not run every night: the data lists it on most nights in the second half of October and on far fewer dates in November.

You do not have to walk into Spain. The Rodalies R11 timetable (version 2026 v.1, dated 4 July 2026) lists short trains between Cerbère and Portbou, the first station in Spain, some of them run by SNCF. On a weekday such as Friday 23 October, an SNCF train leaves Cerbère at 09:39 and reaches Portbou at 09:44, and an R11 regional train leaves Portbou at 10:05 and reaches Barcelona Sants at 12:40. If you miss it, the next one in the weekday table leaves Portbou at 11:24 and reaches Sants at 13:40. At weekends the table has a train from Cerbère at 09:34 (Portbou 09:38) and an R11 from Portbou at 10:35, arriving at Sants at 13:10.

Going north, the weekday R11 that leaves Barcelona Sants at 15:16 runs through to Cerbère, arriving at 18:04. The night train leaves Cerbère at 19:00 and, on Thursday 22 October in SNCF's data, reaches Paris Austerlitz at 06:40.

Option 2: the night train to Latour-de-Carol

The other SNCF night train goes inland via Toulouse, Foix and Ax-les-Thermes to Latour-de-Carol-Enveitg. In Catalan the station is La Tor de Querol-Enveig, and it is the end of Rodalies line R3. In SNCF's data the train leaves Paris Austerlitz at 22:13 on Friday 23 October and arrives at 10:04 on Saturday. From 17 October the data lists it southbound only on some Fridays and Saturdays, and northbound only on some Saturdays and Sundays, leaving Latour-de-Carol at 18:49 and usually reaching Paris at 07:16.

The catch this autumn is the Spanish side. R3 trains do not run through to Barcelona. Rodalies' R3 service page (updated 6 July 2026) says trains run between La Garriga and Puigcerdà/La Tor de Querol, with half the trains that ran before 20 January. Between La Garriga and Barcelona, its service status page lists buses to Barcelona Fabra i Puig instead.

In the R3 timetable dated 6 July 2026, the first train listed from La Tor de Querol leaves at 14:14 and reaches La Garriga at 17:06, four hours after the night train gets in. The timetable also warns that speed restrictions can make journeys longer. Rodalies runs replacement buses from La Tor de Querol as well, listed in a combined bus and train timetable on the R3 service page, so check those before you go. For the trip north, the R3 table has a train that leaves La Garriga at 13:16 and reaches La Tor de Querol at 16:00.

Tickets: two bookings, not one

The Catalan leg is not part of the SNCF ticket. Seat61, the independent rail guide, says these local trains are not on normal train booking systems, and that you buy the ticket from Cerbère to Barcelona at the station in Cerbère. On the R3, Rodalies says on its status page that its tickets are valid on the replacement buses, as long as you validated them at the station where your journey started.

Times change

Every time here comes from a timetable dated between July and October 2026, and the R11 timetable itself says "Schedule subject to changes." Check both the night train and the local train shortly before you travel.
